Key States Affected

The surge is most prominent in the following states, each reporting over 100 active cases:

  • Kerala: Leading with a significant number of cases, Kerala continues to be a hotspot.
  • Maharashtra: Reporting a high number of infections, particularly in urban centers like Mumbai.
  • Delhi: The capital has seen a steady increase, with over 100 active cases.
  • Gujarat: Cases are rising, with the NB.1.8.1 variant first detected in the state.
  • Karnataka: Bengaluru alone accounts for a substantial portion of the state’s cases.
  • Tamil Nadu: The LF.7 variant was first confirmed here, contributing to the rise.
  • Telangana: Also reporting a notable number of cases.

Note: The rise in cases is largely attributed to two new sub-variants of the JN.1 strain, NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, which are currently under monitoring by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Current Situation and Response

The Ministry of Health has emphasized that most cases are mild, with patients recovering under home care. However, four deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, underscoring the need for caution. Health authorities are ramping up surveillance and genome sequencing to track the spread of the new variants. The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Consortium on Genomics (INSACOG) has confirmed one case of NB.1.8.1 and four cases of LF.7 in India.

In response to the surge, states are urging residents to follow preventive measures, including wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, and avoiding crowded places. Increased testing has been implemented following a spike in cases in neighboring countries like Singapore and Hong Kong, where these variants have also been detected.

What You Can Do

To stay safe, health officials recommend:

  • Wearing masks in crowded or enclosed spaces.
  • Frequent handwashing and use of sanitizers.
  • Avoiding self-medication, especially with antibiotics, as advised by experts.
  • Seeking medical attention for severe symptoms.
